Requirements for Obtaining a Marriage License

If are planning to get married, you must first obtain your marriage license.  However, there are several requirements one must meet before they will be issued a marriage license in Los Angeles County, such as:

  • You must show proof of age by presenting your California driver’s license, U.S. passport, or alien resident card.  A certified birth certificate or baptismal record will also be accepted if accompanied with a government-issued picture I.D.
  • Proof of divorce, dissolution, or death.  This requirement only applies to those people who have previously been married.
  • Pay a marriage license fee.  A regular marriage license fee is $70.  A confidential marriage license fee is $70.
  • Marriage license application.  Both you and your fiancĂ© must appear together at the Office of the Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk in Norwalk or at a district office.  Or you have the option of hiring a specialized notary to issue the marriage license.

Once you have obtained your marriage license, your marriage must be solemnized by an authorized officiant.

If you have any additional questions regarding the marriage license requirements in Los Angeles County, please do not hesitate to contact the Law Office of Teresa Beyers today to speak with an experienced Los Angeles family law attorney!
